AMnews proudly presents File Conversion, the first freely distributable
Amiga utility from WordPerfect Corporation! This nifty utility program lets
you transfer your Amiga WordPerfect files to either the 4.2 file format used
in the IBM version of WordPerfect, or to the .doc(ument) format used by
Micro-System Software's word processor Scribble!. Even better, you can also
convert documents FROM IBM and Scribble! formats TO Amiga WordPerfect
format. And if that's not enough, merge files created with WordPerfect and
Scribble! can be transformed for use with either word processr. If you need
processing and merge file compatibility, File Conversion is the utility
you've been looking for!
Getting Started
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
File Conversion, which is named FC in this group of files, can be used
from either Workbench or the CLI. In order to become acquainted with the
options available for it, we suggest you begin by copying FC to a working
disk such as the back-up copy of your word processing disk or hard disk.
Starting FC from the Workbench by double clicking its icon displays its
conversion window and six boxes for file and directory information. These
boxes, from left to right, allow you to:
1) Input the directory and name of the file you wish to convert;
2) Input the name you choose for your converted file and the direcory you
wish to store it in;
3) Input the directory containing the Scribble! format (.fmt) file you want
to use or create, and the name of this file.
When started from the Workbench, FC automatically inputs the name of
the directory containing your FC program file.
For example, if you started from a disk named WordStuff in DF1: (the
external drive), your directory requestors would list WordStuff: in each of
the directory boxes. The three file requestor boxes would contain, from
left to right, Default.IN, Default.OUT, and Default.FMT.
To change any of the file or directory names simply point at the box
with your mouse pointer and click the left mouse button. You may edit the
names using the follwing keys:
KEY(S) FUNCTION
~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~
Right Cursor Move cursor one position right
Left Cursor Move cursor one position left
Shift/right Cursor Move cursor to end of line
Shift/left cursor Move cursor to beginning of line
Del Delete character under cursor
Backspace Delete character left of cursor
Return Stop Editing
Right AMIGA/Q Undo last editing change
Right AMIGA/X Clear the box
For keys listed with a slash (/) such as Right AMIGA/X,
hold down the key shown to the left of the slash and then
press the second key.
File Formats
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Under the directory and filename boxes in FC are two columns marked
INPUT FORMAT and OUTPUT FORMAT. Available in FC are WordPerfect 4.1,
WordPerfect 4.2, WordPerfect Secondary, and Scribble! Merge formats. Both
WordPerfect Secondary and Scribble! Merge formats are used to input lists of
information into a primary document such as inserting the name, address, and
salutation in a mass mail letter.
If you are converting a WordPerfect file from another computer you
should try to determine which file format was used in the original document.
Older versions of IBM WordPerfect create a 5.0 format file as its default
but will save in 4.2 format. With the range of WordPerfect formats
available in FC, you should have no trouble creating a file on any computer
supporting WordPerfect provided that file can be edited using WordPerfect on
your Amiga. (Editor's Note: This is where the Amiga 2000 comes in handy!)
Conversion
~~~~~~~~~~
Once you've chosen the proper directories, entered the file names in
the proper boxes, and chosen the format of the input and output files, all
that's left is to begin the conversion. To the right of format names is the
GO box. Move your mouse pointer to GO, click the left mouse button and your
conversion is underway!
While GO won't earn you $200, clicking on it opens an additional window
labeled PROGRESS. This window informs you of the status of the conversion
and any problem that FC may encounter while converting your files. If you
wish to stop the conversion click the ABORT box.
Error messages reported in the PROGRESS window provide an explanation
of any problem encountered by FC. Many messages are the result of
incorrectly naming the file to be converted or the directory containing the
file. Others involve the conversion process itself. If FC encounters an
error you will be given the option of continuing or stopping the conversion.
Choosing to continue will generally result in a satisfactory conversion
although minor edits in the converted document may be necessary. If in
doubt, continue the conversion if possible, and review the resulting file to
determine its acceptability.
Advanced FC
~~~~~~~~~~~
Using FileConvert from the CLI reduces the amount of input needed when
FC appears on the screen. At the CLI prompt the command structure to start
it is:
FC <dir:input file(s)> <dir:output files(s)> <dir:option file(s)>
You may, of course, type in upper or lower case but be careful with
spaces and what looks to be punctuation marks. Here's what all that means:
FC is the Program Name;
dir: is the directory where the file is located;
<input file(s)> are the file name(s) to be converted;
<output file(s)> are the files name(s) of the converted files;
<option file(s)> are the .fmt (format) files to create or use during
the conversion.
When you start FC from the CLI in this way, it comes up (appears on the
screen) with the names of the directories and files you've specified.
Again, the conversion is started by clicking the GO box.
Matching File Patterns
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When using FC from either the CLI or Workbench you may use file
patterns to choose several files to convert. Patterns for input files are a
combination of letters, numbers and wild cards. An asterick (*) indicates a
match to a file name of any length. A question mark (?) indicates a match
to a single character in the file name. Thus, a file name pattern of
TH?12.* would match files names THE12. and TH512.C and THR12.HELLO.
Patterns for output and option files are a combination of letters,
numbers and the * wildcard. The asterisk will match the complete name of
the current input file. If the input file is THEFILE and the output file
pattern is *.out then the resulting converted file would be named
THEFILE.out.
Be careful to choose output patterns that do not create more input
files or write over existing files. For instance, within the same directory
an input file pattern of *.doc and an output pattern of *.doc can cause the
OUTPUT to create files suitable for the INPUT pattern. FC will be working
an awfully long time if you do that. Like forever.
Final Notes
~~~~~~~~~~~
What can you expect from your converted document? Well, for the most
part converted documents will retain all the formatting and style of the
original. This is especially true when converting between WordPerfect 4.1
and 4.2. When converting from WordPerfect to Scribble! however, you should
be aware that Micro-Systems Software's Scribble! does not accomodate all of
the features available in WordPerfect. As a result, your WordPerfect
document will lose footnotes, super- and sub-scripted letters, specialized
fonts, and special formats when converted to a Scribble! document.
When working with valuable documents be sure to use a copy of the
document when you convert it using FC. Neither AMnews Corp. nor WordPerfect
Corporation accept responsiility for any loss of data due to the use of this
program.
Coming Attractions
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FC is freely distributable so you can legally copy it (along with this
instruction file) and give both to anyone who wants them. If you're a
WordPerfect owner and you find FC helpful, tune into the next issue of
AMnews (Vol.1, No.2, Novewmber/December 1988). We'll have another utility
from WordPerfect in that issue: MacroConvert (Note: MacroConvert is
included with this distribution). Written by WordPerfect Corporation with
an AMnews tutorial, MacroConvert will help you understand, construct and
edit macros that drastically reduce your working and set-up time with
WordPerfect. Other than coming over and doing the work for you, what else
can we do?
